Sharing your ideas of Confucius's choice on Yan Yuan's funeral.

Question: How do you comment on Confucius’s refusal to pay for buying a shell for Yan Yuan’s coffin? Does it show Confucius's lack of sincerity in his "love" toward his so-called "favorite" student?

No.I don't think so. I think it shows that  Confucius restrain himself and conform to the rites. He didn't sell his carriage to buy a coffin when his son Li died, so he did the same when Yan Yuan died. This is not only the observance of etiquette, but also the embodiment of treating these two people equally.

Confucius has his own principles.  He deeply knew the poverty of Yan Yuan's family. His respect and love for Yan Yuan is remarkable and great. The quality of education shouldn't be judged by only one incident. The teaching method is also important.

The story about Confucius's refusal to pay for buying a shell for Yan Yuan's coffin is a complex one, requiring careful consideration of the cultural and historical context in which it occurred. To begin with, it's important to understand that Confucian ethics emphasize respect for one's teachers and the value of learning from them. In this light, Confucius's relationship with his students, including Yan Yuan, was deeply rooted in these principles. It does not necessarily reflect a lack of sincerity in his love for Yan Yuan or his other students. Rather, it may be seen as a way of maintaining formality in the relationship, modeling Confucian values of humility and frugality, or simply adhering to the social norms of the time.

    1. Confucius emphasized the importance of rites and morality in funeral ,in order to express respect for the death.

2.The funeral should reflect the moral values that Yan Yuan lived by.

3.He might have discouraged excessive lavishness or showiness in the funeral, preferring instead a more modest and respectful celebration of Yan Yuan's life.

On the one hand, it is indifferent of him not to considef even a decent funeral for his favorite student from the point of being an individual. On the other hand, from the point of society, Confucius was protecting Li from being violated.

This does not reflect his callousness and indifference; on the contrary, it reveals the harmony between emotion and reason. Reason is his rational thinking, despite his deep feelings for Yan yuan, he still chose not to sell the car and not to allow a generous burial and refrained from the emotions of sadness. On the other hand, his choice was to maintain the etiquette in the social order at that time as well as to protect his disciples from the criticism of the secular society, and this behavior was to protect Yan Yuan.

After Yan Yuan's death, his father Yan Lu asked Confucius to sell his car and buy a coffin for Yan Yuan. But Confucius refused, saying, "When my son Kong Carp died, there was only a coffin, not a coffin. " From this sentence, we can see that Confucius' refusal was not out of stinginess or lack of attention to Yan Yuan, but because he adhered to the Zhou rites and did not want to violate the rites because of his personal feelings. According to ancient Chinese funeral customs, senior officials were buried in one inner coffin and one outer coffin to show respect for their high status. However, Yan Yuan did not reach such a high position. So, despite his deep affection for Yan Yuan, he would not allow himself to violate the ritual rules and conventions he strongly advocated. Secondly, Confucius' refusal was actually a sign of respect for Yan Yuan. Yan Yuan himself was a very ritualized person, and if he were still alive, he would not have allowed Confucius to sell the car for himself. Therefore, Confucius' refusal is also a kind of understanding and respect for Yan Yuan, and he hopes that Yan Yuan can maintain his adherence to "rites" even after his death.

This view is a misunderstanding of Confucius. Confucius' refusal to sell his carriage to buy an outer coffin shell for Yan Yuan does not show a lack of sincerity in his "love" for his student, but is a reflection of his adherence to the principle of propriety.

Although Confucius was very sad in his heart, he would not overstep the rules of etiquette because of his feelings. According to the Zhou ceremony, the funeral level should match the status of the deceased. After the death of the scholar-official can have coffins and coffins, Yan Yuan did not become an official, not a scholar-official, so should not be buried. On the other hand, Yan Yuan has been living in poverty and happiness, according to his own consistent style, he certainly does not want to be buried after death.

By refusing to overstep his role as a teacher, Confucius was actually demonstrating consistency with his teachings about proper social relations. The responsibility for burial arrangements traditionally fell to family members, not teachers.

Rather than showing a lack of love, this incident could be seen as Confucius practicing what he preached - that true care and respect are shown through maintaining proper roles and boundaries, not necessarily through material gestures.

Confucius' attitude was not callous, but rather reflected the Confucian emphasis on the importance of rituals. He believed that personal emotions should not transcend social rituals, even for the funeral of one's closest relative. A person's behavior choices are formed based on their beliefs and ideas, and it is difficult for us to judge different behaviors beyond the limitations of time and space and our own ideas. Confucius' approach in this case reflects a respect and adherence to rituals in a specific era, as well as a deep affection and care for Yan Yuan.

Confucius's conduct at Yan Hui's (Yan Yuan) funeral is a famous story in traditional Chinese culture. According to the *Analects* and other texts, Yan Hui was one of Confucius's most beloved students, known for his diligence in learning and noble character. When Yan Hui died, Confucius was overwhelmed with grief, expressing deep sorrow, which showcased the profound bond between teacher and student.

Confucius also rejected Yan Hui's father's proposal to hold a lavish funeral, advocating for a simple burial according to the rites. This reflected Confucius's emphasis on "li" (propriety) and his advocacy of frugality. Confucius's actions demonstrated his wisdom in balancing personal emotion with social norms. This approach is considered a model of Confucian thought, teaching future generations how to find the right balance between emotional expression and adherence to social standards.

If Confucius had lost his "principle", he would not be Confucius anymore. Faced with the request of his favorite student, although he may also be shedding tears in his heart, and although he knows that he has to bear the "blame" that comes with it, Confucius did not give up his "principle". Sometimes it is impossible to have both fish and bear's paw. I think that when faced with selectivity, most of us are "both wanting and wanting", but in reality, most of the time choosing means making trade-offs rather than having it all.

Confucius initially wanted a grand funeral for his beloved disciple Yan Yuan out of deep affection. However, he ultimately adhered to propriety. In Confucianism, "li" (ritual) is crucial. Yan Yuan was poor, and a grand funeral would violate the principle of propriety related to one's status. Confucius' choice shows his respect for the core value of "li". It also reflects his ability to balance personal feelings and ethical standards. His decision was a practical demonstration of how Confucian teachings should be applied in real - life situations, even in the face of great personal loss.

Confucius's actions could be seen as reflecting his adherence to principles of propriety and integrity. In Confucian thought, the concept of filial piety and proper conduct plays a crucial role. By refusing to contribute to what he might have viewed as a lavish or unnecessary expenditure for a burial item, Confucius could have been highlighting the importance of humility and the value of a simple life, even in death. His reluctance to indulge in extravagant displays may signify a focus on the moral and ethical teachings he imparted, rather than material expressions of affection.

Confucius' refusal to buy a shell for Yan Yuan's coffin does not indicate a lack of affection for this beloved student. On the contrary, it reflects Confucius' commitment to ritual propriety and personal principles. Confucius believed that a gentleman should not sacrifice items needed for his own rituals for the sake of others, demonstrating his respect for the rites and adherence to his moral standards. This decision shows Confucius' balance between emotion and principle, indicating that he had deep feelings for Yan Yuan while also valuing the maintenance of his own ethical code.

According to ancient Chinese funeral customs, high officials were buried in both an inner and an outer coffin as a sign of respect for their high status. However, Yan Yuan hadn't achieved this status. And as a former minister himself, Confucius was obliged to join the funeral procession in a carriage rather than go on foot. Despite his deep affection for Yan Yuan, he couldn't allow himself to be seen breaking the rules and conventions of ritual that he so strongly advocated.

Confucius' grief over Yan Yuan's death was extremely deep. He exclaimed, "Alas! Heaven is destroying me! Heaven is destroying me!" which shows his great pain and reluctance to part with his beloved student. Therefore, we should view this matter from the perspective of Confucius' respect for the rites and his deep feelings for his students, rather than misinterpreting it.

The question of Confucius's refusal to buy a shell for Yan Yuan's coffin is a complex one that requires an understanding of the cultural and social context of the time. Confucius, as a teacher and philosopher, held a deep respect for rituals and propriety, which were central to his teachings. The refusal to buy a shell for Yan Yuan's coffin can be seen from several perspectives:

    1. Adherence to Rituals: Confucius was known for his strict adherence to the rituals and customs of his time. The use of a shell for a coffin was not a standard practice and could be seen as a deviation from the established rites. By not purchasing the shell, Confucius may have been upholding the traditional rites and not wanting to set a precedent that could be seen as improper.

    2. Financial Prudence: Confucius might have been considering the financial implications of such an expenditure. As a teacher, he may not have had the means to afford such a luxury, and it would not have been expected of him to bear such a cost for a student.

    3. Symbolic Gesture: The act of buying a shell could be seen as a symbolic gesture rather than a practical one. Confucius's love and respect for Yan Yuan were likely demonstrated in many other ways throughout their relationship, and the absence of this one gesture does not necessarily indicate a lack of sincerity.

    4. Social Expectations: There were strict social hierarchies and expectations in place during Confucius's time. As a teacher, Confucius may have been bound by these expectations and not have been in a position to make such a decision without causing social upheaval or criticism.

    5. Personal Beliefs: Confucius's personal beliefs about death and the afterlife may have also played a role. He may have believed that the simplicity of a traditional burial was more appropriate and in line with the values he taught.

In conclusion, Confucius's refusal to buy a shell for Yan Yuan's coffin does not necessarily indicate a lack of love or sincerity towards his student. It is more likely a reflection of his commitment to upholding the rituals and social norms of his time, as well as practical considerations related to finance and social expectations. Confucius's relationship with Yan Yuan is remembered for its depth and mutual respect, and this single act should not overshadow the broader context of their interaction and the teachings of Confucianism.

Confucius' choice reflects his respect for the ritual system and his emphasis on social hierarchy. In ancient China, the ritual system was an important part of social order, and people of different social statuses had different funeral rituals. Confucius believed that Yan Yuan, although talented, did not have a noble title, so he could not use the car he had sat in as Yan Yuan's outer coffin. This choice also reflects Confucius' respect for Yan Yuan's identity and status.
