This view is inaccurate. In ancient times, there were specific burial regulations. Confucius's actions were likely in line with the norms and his teachings. His relationship with Yan Yuan was profound. His "love" was expressed in various ways of education and care, not simply judged by this one incident. We should understand it in the context of the era.

Confucius is a cold man. When Yan Yuan died, the others wanted to bury him, but Confucius said it was not his fault that he did not treat Yan Yuan as his son. I feel like it goes against what he said about Ren and Li.

Confucius had a deep affection for his disciple Yan Yuan. When Yan Yuan passed away, Confucius was extremely grieved. His thoughts and choices regarding Yan Yuan's funeral might have been influenced by his concepts of propriety and affection. Confucius believed in showing due respect and solemnity in funerary rites. He likely wanted to give Yan Yuan a proper send - off that was in line with the moral and ritual principles he advocated. This also reflects Confucius's emphasis on the importance of relationships and the proper way to express mourning and respect for the departed. By carefully considering and guiding the funeral arrangements, he was upholding the values of loyalty, propriety, and humaneness that he taught his disciples.

回复 17823563649: Despite his deep affection for Yan Yuan, Confucius did not violate the frugal rites because of it. He was well aware that as a Confucian scholar, he should always adhere to the rites as a guideline, leading by example to set a benchmark for his disciples. In the matter of Yan Yuan's funeral, he not only expressed his mourning and fond memories of Yan Yuan but also stuck to his own concept of rites, embodying a balance between emotion and rite.

Confucius's choice on Yan Yuan's funeral rituals demonstrates a delicate balance between personal attachment and the observance of social rites. His actions reflect the core Confucian values of propriety and the importance of maintaining social order, even in the face of personal grief. Despite his deep affection for Yan Yuan, Confucius chose to uphold the rituals, showcasing his commitment to the principles he taught. This decision is often seen as an embodiment of his philosophy, where personal feelings are subdued for the sake of social harmony and adherence to tradition.

回复 17823563649:According to the records in "The Analects of Confucius", after Yan Hui's death, his father, Yan Lu, asked Confucius to sell his carriage to prepare an outer coffin for Yan Hui. However, Confucius refused. The main reasons are as follows: - Following the Ritual System: Confucius had once served as a high official. According to the regulations of the Zhou Rituals, high officials had to travel by carriage and were not allowed to go on foot. Selling the carriage to buy an outer coffin for Yan Hui would go against this ritual system. Confucius dedicated his whole life to restoring the Zhou Rituals and would not easily compromise on such matters of principle.

Confucius's refusal to pay for buying a shell for Yan Yuan's coffin can be seen as a manifestation of his deep love and respect for his disciple. Confucius's actions reflect his belief that the value of a person's life cannot be measured by material possessions or wealth. Instead, it is the inner qualities and virtues that truly matter. By refusing to pay for the shell, Confucius demonstrated his commitment to upholding these values and his deep love and respect for Yan Yuan. Therefore, it does not show a lack of sincerity in his "love" toward his so-called "favorite" student, but rather a profound expression of his love and respect for him.

Respect and Devotion: Confucius's actions during Yan Hui's funeral demonstrate the profound respect and affection he had for his disciple. Despite the strict social norms and rites of the time, Confucius's choice to exceed the traditional boundaries of a teacher's role in a student's funeral rites indicates the depth of his grief and the high esteem in which he held Yan Hui.

Confucius' stance on Yan Yuan's funeral rituals shows his respect for propriety. He opposed extravagance, maintaining a balance between emotion and rationality. It was in line with Yan Yuan's status and frugality principle, also having educational meaning for disciples despite some differences in understanding.

As a teacher, it is rather heartless to show such indifference to the funeral of one of his favorite students. But at that time, Confucius, as a role model, could never compromise or compromise on the issue of rites, otherwise it would bring negative effects to the people and leave a handle for those who attacked him. So, I understand his choice.

Confucius' act of refusing to buy a shell for Yan Yuan's coffin was not because he lacked sincerity or love for Yan Yuan, but out of respect for traditional etiquette and the maintenance of social order. Confucius' love for Yan Yuan was profound, and his act was a reasonable choice under the specific cultural and social background.

Confucius’s decision regarding Yan Yuan’s funeral reflects his flexible understanding of ritual and his deep compassion. While he strongly advocated for the observance of rites, he acknowledged the poverty of Yan Yuan’s family and accepted a modest funeral arrangement. This demonstrates that Confucius prioritized the essence of rituals—humanity and empathy—over rigid adherence, emphasizing the balance between moral propriety and the realities of life.

Confucius firmly believed in and adhered to the principles of ritual propriety throughout his life. In the case of Yan Yuan's funeral, he opposed the idea of a lavish burial proposed by his disciples. From Confucius's perspective, Yan Yuan was a commoner, and according to the ritual system of that time, a thick burial was not in line with Yan Yuan's social status, which shows Confucius's respect for traditional rituals and his emphasis on doing things in accordance with established norms.

I don't agree with this view. Because Confucius had deep affection and high moral principles. In ancient times, there were specific burial customs and concepts. Confucius’ actions were based on following traditions and moral concepts, not what is misinterpreted as a lack of sincerity. His love and respect for his students were showed in many other aspects such as teachings and values.

Confucius's refusal to pay for buying a shell for Yan Yuan's coffin should not be interpreted as a lack of sincerity in his "love" toward his student. 1.Confucius's refusal to purchase an outer shell for Yan Hui's coffin can be interpreted through various lenses:as a high-ranking official,he felt it was his duty to uphold his social status and image, and walking to buy the shell could have compromised that;he also believed in maintaining personal principles and boundaries, even for a favored student, and was reluctant to act beyond them due to personal feelings;he aimed to set an example for his disciples, teaching them the importance of moderation and rationality in the face of loss;and he may have had economic considerations, being unwilling to part with his property for the funeral. These perspectives suggest that Confucius's actions were guided by a complex interplay of social, personal, and practical factors.

2.Confucius may have thought that true love and respect did not necessarily have to be expressed through material means.

Confucius was rational, and his actions were not heartless. The disciples wanted to bury Yan Yuan, but Confucius said no. Confucius believed that funeral was based on sincere mourning, and Yan Yuan's family was poor, so funeral should be done according to his ability, and heavy burial went against the meaning of frugality. Yan Yuan was poor and simple before his death, and he has been following the rites. After his death, he was buried thick, which also violated his original intention. Confucius has always advocated the propriety of things, personal feelings and social etiquette very clearly. He opposed any act of overstepping the rites and insisted on upholding the sanctity of rites.

Confucius' refusal to sell his carriage to buy an outer shell for Yan Yuan's coffin does not show a lack of sincerity in his "love" for his student but is a reflection of his adherence to the rites.

In ancient Chinese funeral customs during the Zhou Dynasty, only important nobles were qualified to have an outer shell for their coffins. Yan Yuan was a civilian and not entitled to such treatment. Confucius believed that "li" (the rules and rituals) was the foundation of a stable and better society, and he had been committed to upholding the rites throughout his life. When his son Li died, he was also buried in an inner coffin without an outer shell, and Confucius did not go against the rites to give his son an outer shell. Therefore, when Yan Yuan's father Yan Lu requested an outer shell for his son's coffin, Confucius refused in accordance with the rites, even though he deeply mourned Yan Yuan.

Confucius had a deep affection for Yan Yuan. He praised Yan Yuan highly, saying that he was a student who loved to learn and made great progress. After Yan Yuan's death, Confucius was extremely grief-stricken and exclaimed, "Alas! Heaven is destroying me! Heaven is destroying me!". This shows that Confucius had a sincere love and high regard for Yan Yuan. His refusal to buy the outer shell was a matter of principle related to his insistence on the rites, rather than a lack of love for his student.

Confucius might have been concerned about setting a precedent. If he paid for Yan Yuan's coffin shell, it could create expectations for similar gestures in the future, potentially leading to financial strain or unfair favoritism.Confucius emphasized the importance of moral integrity and avoiding ostentatious displays of wealth. Paying for an expensive coffin shell might be seen as a form of extravagance, which goes against his teachings on simplicity and modesty.Confucius's refusal does not necessarily indicate a lack of love or respect for Yan Yuan. Instead, it reflects his commitment to maintaining a higher standard of moral conduct. Confucius's love for Yan Yuan was expressed through his teachings, guidance, and the deep respect he held for Yan Yuan's character and abilities. In Confucian thought, the true measure of a relationship lies in the heart and actions, not in material possessions. Confucius might have believed that the most meaningful way to honor Yan Yuan was through his teachings and the memory of their relationship, rather than through material goods.

Confucius's refusal was not based on disregard for Yan Yuan, but on the basis of his educational philosophy. Confucius advocated the cultivation of human abilities and virtues through education, rather than relying on material support. In his view, the real way to help students is to give them the knowledge and wisdom to face life and death independently. Therefore, Confucius's rejection can be seen as an inspiration aimed at educating Yan Yuan to understand the philosophy of life and death, as well as his attitude towards life.
Confucius's emphasis on moral values such as benevolence, righteousness, courtesy, and wisdom prompts students to reflect on the meaning of life. As a protégé of Confucius, Yan Yuan must have been able to understand the deeper philosophy that Confucius wanted to convey. In Confucius's view, relying too much on material or external help could weaken an individual's self-growth and courage. Therefore, this act does not represent a lack of love for Yan Yuan, but rather an expectation of his spiritual independence.
The relationship between Confucius and Yan Yuan is a special teacher-student relationship, which is both intimate and serious. Confucius's respect and expectation for Yan Yuan is reflected in daily teaching, not just material support. Confucius's stern presence in front of his students was often intended to instill awe in the students and to push them to study harder. At this time, Confucius's refusal is actually a kind of respect and trust for the student's personality and ability.

Confucius emphasized observing rites. As a person who once held a certain position in the State of Lu, according to the rites, he was required to travel by carriage and couldn't abandon this norm for buying the coffin. His adherence to rites shows his principle and belief system. In conclusion, we can't simply think that Confucius lacked sincerity in loving Yan Yuan just because of this refusal.

an era where nobles often spent lavishly on funerals, Confucius chose simplicity, demonstrating his opposition to

Confucius's refusal doesn't mean lack of love for Yan Yuan. It reflects his adherence to rituals. Rituals were crucial to him and had to be strictly followed based on social status. As a Scholar-Bureaucrat, he couldn't sell his carriage to buy the shell as it violated ritual norms.

Also, Confucius advocated simple funerals. Yan Yuan lived simply and frugally. A simple burial fit his character. Moreover, Confucius stressed that the essence of mourning is heartfelt grief and respect, not a luxurious funeral. So, his refusal shows respect for rituals and understanding of Yan Yuan, in line with his ideology and educational concept.

The opinion was false. Yan Yuan was one of Confucius' favorite disciples, and Confucius was deeply saddened by Yan Yuan's death. However, in the arrangement of Yan Yuan's funeral, the "rites" advocated by Confucius emphasized moderation and appropriateness, rather than the pursuit of superficial luxury and extravagance. He believes that funerals should conform to personal status and social norms, and should not exceed certain limits. In the social background at that time, the excessive extravagance of the funeral may lead to the bad trend of the social atmosphere, destroy the balance and order of the ritual system.

Confucius was deeply grieved by the death of Yan Yuan, to the point where he even lamented, “Heaven has taken away my support,” expressing his profound sorrow and despair over Yan Yuan’s passing. This revealed the deep affection Confucius had for Yan Yuan, who was not only his disciple but also the ideal successor in his eyes. At Yan Yuan’s funeral, Confucius insisted on “mourning with propriety and offering sacrifices with sincerity,” without any ostentatious grandiosity, but rather with genuine sincerity. He emphasized that funerals should be arranged according to the family’s financial means, and since Yan Yuan’s family was impoverished, a lavish burial would have violated the principle of frugality in rites. Confucius believed that since Yan Yuan lived a simple life, it would be against his wishes to have an extravagant funeral after his death.

When evaluating Confucius's choice regarding the funeral rites for Yan Yuan, we can consider several perspectives. ### Balancing Personal Feelings with Public Norms 1. **Respecting Tradition and Norms**: As a representative figure of Confucian thought, Confucius placed great importance on ritual systems. His arrangements for Yan Yuan's funeral likely adhered strictly to the social etiquette norms of the time, demonstrating his respect for traditional culture. Through this behavior, Confucius not only expressed respect for the deceased but also emphasized the importance of social order. 2. **Expressing Personal Emotions**: Yan Yuan was one of Confucius's most beloved students, and Confucius had deep feelings for him. In handling Yan Yuan's funeral, Confucius might have incorporated appropriate expressions of personal emotion while adhering to public rituals. For example, he might have chosen a simple ceremony or delivered sincere eulogies to express his grief. 3. **Educational Significance**: Every action of Confucius had strong demonstrative value. His approach to Yan Yuan's funeral could also serve as an educational tool, aiming to teach his students and the broader society how to find a proper balance between personal emotions and public norms. Through this event, Confucius conveyed a value system that respects personal feelings without neglecting social norms. ### Conclusion In summary, Confucius's choice in handling Yan Yuan's funeral reflects both a reasonable expression of personal emotions and adherence to social public norms. This approach demonstrates the profound ideological content of Confucius, seeking harmony and unity between the individual and society. It also reflects Confucius's sense of responsibility as a teacher and thinker, as well as the wisdom he displayed in addressing specific issues in life.

Under the etiquette of the time, Confucius, as a nobleman, could not travel without a vehicle, which was a compliance with etiquette; moreover, Confucius treated his students equally, and did not use a coffin for his own son when he passed away, treating Yan Yuan the same; at the same time, Confucius was well aware of Yan Yuan‘s virtue of being content with poverty and pursuing virtues, from this perspective, Yan Yuan himself may not have wanted to violate the principle of frugality, so it cannot be concluded that Confucius's love for Yan Yuan was not sincere.
