He decides to stay and fight for Thrace, as he knows that once he leaves he will never get the freedom he wants.

Moreover, he is merciful. He saved his comrades in different crises. It is because he doesn’t want to let innocent people die that he joined the fight at the risk of his life. Finally, he saved Thrace successfully and found out the truth about the death of his wife and children. By doing this, he overcomes self-doubt and gets his faith back.
