There are differences in many ways. First, research reports are used to refer describe the results of academic research in various fields. Then, theri structures are different. Research report's structures are more complex than general argumentataions'. What's more, research reports affects scientifically.

In my opinion,research report need writer to scan plenty of information for the research object. And the information should have high reliability. Its aim explain one object. The argumenttation also need to scan the information and the writer need evidence. But its aim prove one object for other objects.
