Hugh Hampton Young Worked for the development of urinology and tried his effort to found a new generation of urologist system. He has completed a number of scientific research and medical experiment in the field of urology. Hugh Hampton Young was the first person to use ureteroscope to observe the structure of ureter to kidneys in 1912. He began a residency program in urology and the James Buchanan at the Johns Hopkins. In Hugh Young's Day, antibiotics were almost non existent, and he introduced red mercury instead of iodine to sterilize the skin during surgery to reduce irritation. The most common method used at the time was to scrub hands with a mercury compound, which is also used at the Johns Hopkins. Dr Hugh Young promotes the use of red mercury as a preservative and as a systemic antibacterial agent. When his wife, Bessy, suffered from Streptococcus Viridans, he tried to cure her by intravenous mercury injections, but unfortunately she died from a blood transfusion reaction.

Hugh young is committed to the development of urology. He always dreamed of establishing Urology Association, and established urology member organization since 1897. From 1907 to 1908, he was elected president of the first Urology Association in the United States. In 1917, he founded "Journal of Urology", which is the first journal of Urology in the world and has been widely spread in the world in the past 100 years. He has been the editor in chief of the magazine for many years. The highest honor award for urology is the Hugh Hampton Young Award of the year established by the American Urological Association in 1969 in honor of Hugh young.
