There is a popular joke about the Italians, that is, to stop an Italian talking just block his/her hands. How do you understand this joke from a cultural aspect?

That's because one of the interesting things in Italy is that you can't speak without gestures. Not only in face-to-face communication, hands constantly make gestures, sometimes even when making a phone call or smoking, the other hand must also dance up and down in the air. A foreigner who learns Italian but doesn't understand Italian gestures always feels "limp" when communicating.

Italians usually speak with a loud and fast voice. They also like to use various gestures that I can't understand. The rich communication gestures of Italians are not only their unique secret language, but also inherit the historical significance and unique culture of centuries. Therefore, mastering the meaning of Italian gestures, the desire to make friends is half successful. In addition, there are more than 250 gestures expressing different meanings in daily life.

Italians are bold and informal, especially in the way they communicate. They talk loudly and gesticulating a lot. One quip is that if you tie the hands of italians, they won't be able to talk. Indeed, from the elderly to children, they are used to communicating while gesticulating.

Body language is a way of expression.

There are many gestures that Italians often use in their daily life. The number of gestures is basically the same as the number of words they speak. Italians think that body language can convey real feelings more than voice, while people who don't like gestures are regarded as indifferent people.

It's not just Italians. A lot of people use body language when they talk, which helps them express themselves better. Some studies show that they are usually more open and enthusiastic. And it depends on people's different personalities and cultural environment.

Italians tend to use a variety of gestures to express their emotions when they are speaking, so the hand is also known as the Third mouth. Italians use more than 250 gestures, roughly the same number of gestures as the number of words spoken, to indicate which words are correct. So if you lock an Italian's hand, he will not be able to speak.

Italian life is bold and unconstrained, especially in the way of "finger pointing". There is a joking saying that if the Italian hands are tied, they will not speak. Indeed, from the old to the young, they are used to communicating with each other while making gestures. The "hand" is also known as the Italian "third mouth”.Before you travel to Italy, you may as well learn some Italian gestures. When you can't communicate with each other in language, see how they compare. I believe you can understand his general meaning.
