Firstly ,the way of loyalty . Loyalty means be true to your heart .In the dilemma between Chen and Cai , despite the difficult situation such as hunger and danger, Confucius still did not give up his teachings and ideals, and consistently insisted on spreading his ideas. This kind of adherence to their own beliefs and the unremitting pursuit of ideals, reflects the spirit of "loyalty".

Secondly ,the way of forgiveness . Forgiveness means reciprocity .The officials of Chen and CAI feared that the use of Confucius by Chu would be disadvantageous to them, so they sent a besiege to Confucius and his disciples. For their behavior, Confucius did not complain or criticize too much, but with a tolerant attitude to understand their position and motivation. In the spirit of "forgiveness", Confucius understood that everyone had their own interests and considerations, and although their actions caused him difficulties, he did not resent them or take revenge on them.

To sum up, in the dilemma between Chen and Cai, Confucius embodied his consistent adherence to the "way of loyalty and forgiveness" by strengthening his own faith, teaching his disciples, and understanding and tolerance of others. This persistence is not only the practice of his own doctrine, but also the education and demonstration of his disciples, which has a profound impact on later generations.

During Confucius' travels between Chen and Cai, he and his disciples faced a difficult situation such as a shortage of food and other hardships. The "way of loyalty and forgiveness" in this context can be understood as follows. Loyalty here might imply his steadfast commitment to his teachings and moral principles. Despite the external adversities, he remained loyal to the values he advocated - the pursuit of benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom and faith. Forgiveness could refer to his attitude towards the difficult situation and those who might have caused or exacerbated it. He didn't give in to resentment or despair. Instead, he took it as a test of his beliefs and his ability to endure, showing a kind of magnanimity and tolerance. It was his way of adhering to his educational and moral mission through hardships and still treating others and the world with an understanding and benevolent heart.

Confucius saw his endurance in the Chen-Cai plight as upholding the "Way of Loyalty and Forgiveness" because: Loyalty: - He stayed true to his ideals of spreading teachings for a better society, even when trapped, like continuing to teach. - He led disciples wholeheartedly, setting an example in hardship. Forgiveness: - He was patient with disciples' doubts and didn't resent the Chen-Cai officials' actions. - He calmly accepted the difficult situation as a test of his pursuit.           The experience of Confucius between the states of Chen and Cai demonstrated his adherence to the concepts of "Zhong" (loyalty) and "Shu" (forgiveness), which were the crucial reasons for his perseverance in that difficult situation. Here's the detailed explanation:

The Manifestation of "Zhong" Loyalty to Ideals and Beliefs: Confucius cherished the ideal of "Ren" (benevolence) in his heart and was devoted to promoting his teachings to restore social order. Between Chen and Cai, despite facing extremely tough circumstances such as being besieged and running out of food for seven days, he never gave up his ideas and pursuits. This kind of persistent pursuit of ideals is a manifestation of "Zhong". That is, he exerted himself wholeheartedly to achieve the goals he believed in. He thought that a gentleman should make unremitting efforts in the pursuit of "Dao" (the Way) and remain steadfast regardless of any difficulties and obstacles. For example, when his disciples had doubts or wavered due to the harsh situation, Confucius still firmly expounded the importance of "Dao" to them and encouraged them to persevere with him.

Adherence to Self-Moral Requirements: "Zhong" was also reflected in the strict adherence to his own moral cultivation. Confucius had always set an example by practicing the moral standards he advocated. In the difficult environment, he could still maintain the demeanor of a gentleman, continuing to lecture, chant, and play music without showing any sign of decline. Such behavior was not only an education and demonstration for his disciples but also a loyal manifestation of his moral beliefs. He believed that only by practicing what he preached could he influence and teach others.

The Manifestation of "Shu" Understanding and Tolerance of Others: During the distress between Chen and Cai, the disciples had different thoughts and emotions because of the difficult situation. Some disciples were puzzled and even raised questions. Confucius didn't blame them but patiently communicated with them, understanding their confusion and concerns. This embodied Confucius' concept of "Shu", which means being able to think from others' perspectives and sympathize with their difficulties.

Acceptance of Different Views: Facing some different opinions put forward by his disciples, for instance, Zigong once suggested that Confucius should slightly lower the requirements of his teachings so that they could be more easily accepted by the world. Although Confucius didn't adopt this suggestion, he didn't completely deny Zigong's idea either. Instead, through communication with him, he further elaborated his own views. This showed that Confucius was able to embrace different viewpoints with an inclusive attitude, reflecting the spirit of "Shu".

In conclusion, Confucius' perseverance between Chen and Cai was his practice of the ideas of "Zhong" and "Shu". This kind of perseverance not only reflected his personal moral cultivation and ideal pursuit but also set an example for later generations in adhering to beliefs and not fearing hardships.

Confucius' experience between Chen and CAI shows his perseverance. According to the Records of the Grand Historian, Confucius Family, Confucius was trapped between Chen and CAI for seven days, without food and cooking, but even so, he still adhered to his faith and moral principles, sang endless songs, and examined himself. This kind of spirit of sticking to morality in the difficult situation has a deep inner connection with the thought of doing one's own heart and pushing oneself to others in the way of loyalty and forgiveness. From the perspective of "loyalty", Confucius' perseverance between Chen and CAI reflects his adherence to his own beliefs and moral principles. He tried his best to spread his ideas and did not change his mind even in the face of difficulties, which is the embodiment of "loyalty". He not only hopes that he can realize his ideal, but also hopes that others can jointly pursue truth and morality, and this spirit is consistent with the "loyalty" of "establishing people when you want to establish yourself, achieving yourself and becoming a master". From the perspective of "forgiveness", Confucius still maintained a tolerant and understanding attitude in the difficult situation. He did not resent others or society for what had happened to him, but actively sought ways to solve the problem. This spirit of understanding others and understanding society in the face of adversity is the embodiment of "forgiveness". He knows that he does not want to accept difficulties and pain, so he does not impose this pain on others, but tries to find a way to live in harmony.

Loyalty means that if a person wants to succeed on their own, they should also help others succeed; If you want to be accessible to yourself, you should also allow others to be accessible. It embodies the spirit of dedication and empathy, which means actively helping others achieve their goals while pursuing one's own success.Forgive me, that is, 'Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself.'. The chen cai dilemma that Confucius faces is bestowed by some narrow minded ministers of Chen and Cai who think the mandate of Confucius and his insightful criticism on politics would bring them into precarious situation.  They trapped Confucius and during this time Confucius's perseverance manifest itself in his adhering to original passion though it is not accepted by multitudes. When facing the difficulty, Confucius and his apprentices ponder and discuss. Someone asked, "we are not welcomed by no one,  is it our faults to set the protocol standard so high?" But Confucius gave his answer as we shall anyway stick to our principles, though others repulse it, and it is neither sensible nor sustainable to make any compromise. This is where the loyalty of Confucius lies---the loyalty that followed by many Chinese later among which Mengzi has said even if thousands of people is ahead, i still move forward.  For Confucius' forgiveness, i would like to explain it as release. When Confucius make it to break Chen and Cai's spell, They make it to Chu kingdom and pay a visit to the Duke, seemingly a promising future ahead, yet unfortunately, the Duke who appreciates and loves and respects Confucius died shortly after. Confucius hereafter lose his hope in circulating and preaching his theories nationwide, yet still believes in Li and Ren.

Confucius' perseverance in the difficult situation between Chen and Cai, which he called "the way of loyalty and forgiveness" that he had always insisted on, was mainly due to the core spirit of the "way of loyalty and forgiveness". The "Way of Loyalty and Forgiveness" is an important part of Confucius' thought, in which "loyalty" refers to doing one's best for others and treating them with one's own heart. In this way, "loyalty" means to do one's best for others, to treat others with one's own heart, i.e., to be loyal and selfless, and to do one's best; and "forgiveness" means to do one's best for others, to treat others with tolerance, and to think in a different way. This moral code emphasizes the importance of loyalty and tolerance, respect for others and understanding when dealing with interpersonal relationships. In addition, Confucius also embodied his gentlemanly nature and his spirit of adherence to the Way of Loyalty and Forgiveness in the face of adversity. He believed that a true gentleman should hold fast to his beliefs and principles, not be moved by external things, and maintain inner peace and firmness even when faced with life and death trials. This spirit is not only an adherence to the "Way of Loyalty and Forgiveness", but also a profound pursuit of the value and meaning of life.

Confucius spent much of his life traveling between different states, aiming to influence their rulers and promote his philosophical teachings.

As for this certain event between Chen and Cai, two small states with limited political power, it was a chance to show his moral philosophy and practice his principles. To be more specific, on the one hand, Confucius remained determined to his mission to bring about philosophical thoughts and suggestions on good governance to the rulers, despite facing rejection and lack of support from them, including those in Chen and Cai. Even though they did not fully embrace his ideas, Confucius did not give up on his mission. His persistence demonstrated his loyalty to the ideals he believed would benefit society.

On the other, Confucius' actions also reflected his commitment to forgiveness, particularly in dealing with the rulers and ministers of these states. Even when he encountered personal humiliation, disrespect, or failure to achieve his goals, Confucius was willing to forgive those who failed to understand his mind. In this way, he set an example of tolerance and was willing to continue his efforts despite setbacks.

The perseverence of Confucius is described as the way of loyalty and forgiveness because it’s tightly conneted with his ethical thoughts.
On the one hand, loyalty means being true to oneself and caring for others, emphasizing the need for individuals to be loyal, trustworthy and dedicated to others, family and country. On the other hand, forgiveness, means “do as you would be done by others” and signals the need for empathy when dealing with relationships. These two principles encourage people to understand and respect others while doing their own works.

As a guest treat by Chen and Cai, he refused to take the chance from Chu so that Chen and Cai did not have to be in a worse place. As for forgiveness,it’s much easier to understand. If we put our feet in other’s shoes, it’s quite easy to understand the concerns of Chen and Cai. No one will accept the fact that your hometown is going to be taken place by another country and just sit by. So Confucius chose to do so just because of understanding and respect for others.

1.Loyalty to Principles and Ideals: Confucius saw loyalty not merely as allegiance to rulers but as a steadfast dedication to moral principles and societal values, such as justice, benevolence, and righteousness. His loyalty was directed toward his mission to educate and improve society, regardless of whether others supported him or understood his vision. This episode became an illustration of how Confucius embodied loyalty not to power but to the ideals he deemed essential for a harmonious society.

2.Forgiveness Toward Adversity and Mankind: The episode demonstrates forgiveness because, despite the betrayal and hardships he faced, Confucius chose not to hold resentment. He forgave the obstacles and setbacks on his journey, understanding them as part of the broader process of moral cultivation. By maintaining his compassion for others, Confucius exemplified that forgiveness is a choice that sustains one's peace and moral integrity, even in adversity.

3.Spiritual Perseverance as a Path to Enlightenment: Confucius’ experience also highlights perseverance as a key part of spiritual and moral development. His journey was not only physical but symbolic of inner resilience. By characterizing this journey as the "Way of Loyalty and Forgiveness," Confucius suggested that enduring hardship while remaining true to one's values and compassionate to others is a path to higher moral understanding.

This perseverance later became a foundational lesson in Confucian thought, illustrating that loyalty and forgiveness strengthen one’s character and dedication to a virtuous life, regardless of external recognition or rewards.

    1. Despite facing extreme hardship and hunger, Confucius remained steadfast in his moral and political ideals. He did not abandon his concept of "benevolent governance," which demonstrates the spirit of "loyalty" or "zhong" in Chinese, meaning being true to one's beliefs and pursuits. Confucius believed that even in adversity, one must adhere to the right path and not change one's principles due to external circumstances.

    2. In the face of dire circumstances, Confucius showed understanding and tolerance towards his disciples. He did not blame them for their predicament but instead used dialogue to enlighten them about the "Dao" (the Way). Confucius encouraged them to maintain their loyalty and pursuit of the "Dao" even when they were not understood or accepted. This understanding and tolerance reflect the spirit of "forgiveness" or "shu," which means to put oneself in another's shoes and understand their position and actions.

3.During the emergency of being without food, Confucius and his disciples had to act in ways that might have been considered improper under normal circumstances, such as accepting food and wine without questioning their source. However, once they safely returned to Lu, Confucius resumed strict adherence to rituals. This shows that Confucius could be flexible in emergencies while still maintaining a moral baseline. This balance between steadfastness and adaptability is also a manifestation of the "Way of Loyalty and Forgiveness."

    4. Through his conversations with his disciples during the Chen and Cai ordeal, Confucius not only expressed his views on their predicament but also inspired a profound understanding of the "Dao." By doing so, Confucius practiced the "Way of Loyalty and Forgiveness," which means adhering to correct moral education while understanding the potential confusion and bewilderment of his disciples in difficult situations.

In summary, Confucius's perseverance between Chen and Cai, characterized by his loyalty to his ideals and principles (loyalty) and his understanding and forgiveness towards his disciples (forgiveness), exemplifies the "Way of Loyalty and Forgiveness." This spirit is not only reflected in his personal persistence and actions but also in his education and enlightenment of his disciples.

Confucius emphasized loyalty as a core virtue in interpersonal relationships. He believed that loyalty was essential for maintaining harmony and stability in society. In the context of personal interactions, loyalty meant being faithful to one's commitments, promises, and allegiances.

As for forgiveness, Confucius taught that it was important to forgive others when they made mistakes or offended us. He believed that forgiveness could help repair broken relationships and restore harmony. By forgiving others, we demonstrate our own virtue and wisdom, and we also create an opportunity for the offender to learn from their mistakes and become better people.

Perseverance, on the other hand, was another key virtue that Confucius promoted. He believed that perseverance was essential for achieving one's goals and overcoming obstacles. Whether in academic pursuits, moral cultivation, or any other endeavor, Confucius taught that one must remain steadfast and unwavering in their efforts to succeed.

Now, if we apply these concepts to the question at hand, it's possible that Confucius may have described his perseverance between Chen and Cai as the "Way of Loyalty and Forgiveness" if he was facing difficulties or challenges in his relationship with these two places or individuals. In such a context, loyalty may have referred to his commitment to his principles and values, while forgiveness may have been necessary to overcome any grievances or offenses that had occurred. By persevering in the face of adversity, Confucius may have demonstrated his own virtue and wisdom, and set an example for others to follow.

Embodiment of "loyalty": Firmly pursue to establish and help others: The connotation of "loyalty" is "When one wishes to establish oneself, one should also help others to establish; when one wishes to succeed, one should also help others to succeed." Confucius had a firm moral ideal and political aspiration. This perseverance in his own ideal is the practice of "loyalty." He hopes that through his own efforts, he can set a correct example for others and society, guiding people to the correct path of morality and politics. This is a higher-level "establishing others" and "helping others succeed."

Loyalty to and inheritance of the Dao: Confucius believed that the Dao he adhered to was correct and in line with the needs of social development. Therefore, he was loyal to his Dao. In the difficult situation, he still insisted on lecturing, reciting poems, playing the zither, and singing, imparting knowledge and moral concepts to his disciples. This is not only the inheritance of knowledge but also the loyalty and perseverance to the Dao he believes in. He hopes that through his words and deeds, his disciples can also be loyal to the Dao and inherit the Dao.
