“No man is an island, entire of itself.” This is a line from John Donne's poem No Man Is an Island. It is quoted several times in the film About a Boy. Please share your views on the line.
No man is an island isolated from the public land.We cannot live without other people or their contribution to our society, which illustrates that we are the sum of social connection. In addition,it also means we should also undertake some responsibilities.
there seems to be a mournful calmness in the poet's mood, no high cries, no sharp sarcasm, just a shallow whisper。beacause of death ,it is an only thing that created a sense of deep-seated lose, and as well, death leaves us alone and connect us tightly.
It seems that we live independently in the world, but, in fact, we can't live without different kinds of services the society around us provides for us. We can see that some continents are apart from the others, nevertheless, all the continents are connected with each other undersea, just like us.
I agree with the idea in the poem. First and foremost, no man is an island and the individual cannot be seperated from the society. Everyone has social properties and must rely on society for our own development and progress. What's more, we are in connection with the society and people to a certain degree through the internet and other virtual or realistic approaches. For instance, the food we eat may come from farmers far away from us. Last but not least, the island depends on the men. Just as the ending of the film, all men are participants of the development of the society, who can make a difference to better the society no matter what they do. In a nutshell, I agree with the idea of the poem.
"Human nature is the sum total of social relations." As human-being, there are no isolates. Each of us has an inseparable relationship with the outside world, whether good or not. Sometimes pessimistically, we presume that we do not make sense to this world, just a nobody. But remember, The world is made up of thousands nobody like us. Just as Gucheng's words"Born as an ant and beautiful as a god". The fall of any one of us is a loss to all of humanity. 83-09
This line writen byJohn Donne indicates the value shared by people all around the world, namely, the kindness to all human being. It is without doubt that the spirit mentioned in this poem is desperatedly needed even in our era.Just as the sentence goes,"No man is an island".Only by giving a helping hand to people in need can we live in harmony finally,no matter mentally or physically.
From my perspective, "No man is an island" intends to illustrate that no one can live entirely alone without any help from others, which also means disconnected from society. This may reflect the lonely mentality of some people, but it is impossible. Once we live in society, we can't really survive without it.
Men is a social animal. Without living with others we can fulfill our potential as well as self value. A man alone cannot be taken as a meaning to the world.
