Allomorphs refer to variant forms of one morpheme.

Phonologically conditioned allomorphs vary according to neighbouring sounds. The English plural morpheme is a typical example: /s/ in cats, /z/ in dogs and /ɪz/ in buses, decided by the final phoneme of nouns.

By contrast, morphologically conditioned allomorphs depend on lexical/morphological rules rather than sounds. The irregular past tense go‑went cannot be predicted phonologically; this special allomorph only applies to the verb go.
