Comprehension is the premise and foundation of expression

Comprehension refers to accurately grasping the original text’s literal meaning, logical structure, emotional tone, cultural connotation, stylistic features and author’s intention. Without thorough and correct comprehension, expression will become a meaningless game of words—even if the target language is fluent and elegant, it will distort the original meaning, resulting in mistranslation or misinterpretation. In other words, comprehension determines the accuracy of translation; it is the "source" of faithful translation.

2. Expression is the embodiment and goal of comprehension

Expression means converting the understood meaning into natural, smooth and standardized target language, conforming to its linguistic habits and cultural context. Even if the translator fully understands the original text, poor expression—such as rigid word-for-word translation, awkward syntax or obscure wording—will make the translation unreadable and fail to convey the original information effectively. Expression determines the readability and acceptability of translation; it is the "destination" of the entire translation activity.

3. The two stages interact and promote each other
