When it comes to translation, there are main stages: comprehension and expression. Can you discuss the relationship between the two stages? Do you think which stage is more important?

By 张建国 2天前 7次浏览 课时6

In translation, comprehension and expression are not a linear sequence but a dialectical loop. You can't express what you don't understand, and you can't verify your understanding until you try to express it. They are interdependent.

Which is more important?

Comprehension is the non-negotiable foundation. A flawed expression can be polished; a flawed comprehension is a fundamental failure. If you misunderstand the source text, no amount of elegant writing can save the translation. Therefore, while both are critical, comprehension holds the primary position as the prerequisite for any meaningful expression.

The Relationship Between Comprehension and Expression in Translation

Comprehension and expression are the two indispensable core stages in translation, forming a dialectically unified, sequential and interdependent relationship.

    1. The relationship between comprehension and expression

    - Comprehension is the premise and foundation
Comprehension refers to accurately grasping the meaning, logical relationship, emotional color, cultural connotation and stylistic features of the source text. Without correct and in-depth comprehension, expression will become blind and baseless—even fluent sentences are mistranslation or distortion.
    - Expression is the purpose and externalization of comprehension
Expression means converting the understood meaning into natural, accurate and idiomatic target language. Even if the source text is thoroughly understood, poor expression will lead to obscure, stiff or unreadable translation, failing to achieve the communicative goal of translation.
    - The two stages interact and penetrate each other
In practice, comprehension and expression are not completely separated. During expression, translators often re-examine and deepen their comprehension of the original text; meanwhile, the need for accurate expression also promotes more careful comprehension.

    2. Which stage is more important?

Comprehension is more fundamental and decisive.

    - Errors in comprehension lead to essential mistakes in translation, which cannot be remedied by superb expression skills.
    - Expression mainly affects the readability and style of the translation, but comprehension determines whether the translation is "correct" in the first place.

    In short:
Comprehension ensures "accuracy" (not wrong), and expression ensures "perfection" (not stiff). Accuracy is the bottom line of translation, so comprehension is more important.

If you want, I can also write this into a short English essay suitable for homework or exams.
