definition of "word" in Chinese

By Chloe 2020-12-26 278次浏览 课时26

Chinese and English are different languages, so they should have different ways to define what a "word" is. In English they have alphabets, and in Chinese we have characters. In English they have syllables, we also have syllables, but in one English word, they might have up to four syllables, while in Chinese each character represents one syllable.

Each each Chinese character is either a morpheme or a word in the sense that they all have meaning or can be a semantic component in a word. For example, “走”alone has the meaning of walk, so it is a word, but "葡" is a semantic component for "葡萄" and it only has meaning when it is together with “萄". , so it should be regarded as a morpheme, which means this morpheme can still be divided into two parts, which are the radical 草 for its meaning (a submorpheme?) and 匋 for its sound.

Chinese word is more complex because expressions like "morpheme", "word", "phrase" share fuzzy boundaries, so when we describe the linguistic features in Chinese, we need to be very cautious in using those foreign concepts. For example, “新版”in English is a phrase, but in Chinese is an adjective and should be regarded as a word. In the phrase "把握命题思路", there are three words “把握”、“命题” and “思路”,in the first word "把”and "握" are, in this context, both verbal morphemes with the same radical 手, and the word is formed similar to "chitchat", they can also be used as independent words, like "把" as an important component in forming the 把grammatical structure, and “握”means to grip.  The second word “命题" has its internal verb-object structure, nevertheless it is a attributional word in the phrase. So morphemes in English might change the meaning and category of the word (as in act, interact and interaction), whereas morphemes in Chinese may stand at both radical and character level, and at the character level they may interact with each other in a more complex way.
