spatial deixis in Chinese

By Chloe 2020-12-25 282次浏览 课时51

Spatial deixis in Chinese are quite similar to spatial deixis in English, we also have “here, there, this city, that school”. If we want someone to come to the place where we stand, we say “过来”, in which “过”is a verb and “来”is a verb as a complement; if we want someone to be away from us, we say “过去一点儿”. We also say, as in English, "我来了", to show that we are moving to the place where the hearer is located, or "我过去了”to suggest we are going away to another place the hearer might know. An interesting point is that we use “老地方” to refer to a place only the interlocutors know because they share the same background knowledge as they might have been there together at least once.
