Ben Jonson , the author of Song: To Celia, was a distinguished English Renaissance poet and playwright, Shakespeare’s contemporary and Britain’s first official Poet Laureate, whose writing style is concise, elegant, classical and restrained. This poem celebrates pure spiritual love instead of worldly sensory pleasure, with two key images: eyes and wine in the first stanza, showing the lover’s gaze is more precious than common wine and even the gods’ nectar to satisfy spiritual thirst, and a rosy wreath in the second stanza, which stays fresh and fragrant after Celia breathes on it, its sweet smell coming from Celia’s unique charm rather than the roses themselves.

Why does the poet value Celia’s eyes and breath more than wine and fresh roses in Song: To Celia?
