    Concise Answer
Elizabethan mainstream romance followed Petrarch’s mode: chivalric, idealized love for a perfect, angelic woman. Shakespeare’s two love narratives break and broaden this tradition:
    1. Love for the young man expands romantic definitions. He shifts supreme spiritual adoration from women to a male friend, elevating same-sex platonic affection as a purer, timeless ideal love beyond conventional heterosexual courtship.
    2. Love for the Dark Lady subverts traditional romance. He abandons the flawless female stereotype, depicting tangled, shameful, carnal desire with an imperfect, unfaithful woman, exposing the messy, flawed reality of passion that Petrarchan poetry deliberately ignored.
In sum, Shakespeare broadens the boundary of ideal love and dismantles the artificial, sanitized romantic stereotype of his age.
