Singapore is a multicultural city-state shaped by its major ethnic groups and the profound impacts of cultural diversity, which can be elaborated as follows:

First, the major ethnic groups in Singapore are the Chinese (making up around 76% of the population), Malays (about 15%), and Indians (roughly 7%), with a small percentage of Eurasians and other ethnic minorities forming the remainder. These groups are the cornerstone of Singapore’s cultural fabric, each bringing unique traditions, languages, and beliefs.

Second, the influence of these diversified cultural groups on Singapore is multi-faceted:

1. Cultural richness: It has created a vibrant cultural landscape, with celebrated festivals like Chinese Lunar New Year, Malay Hari Raya Puasa, Indian Deepavali, and Eurasian Christmas all recognized as national holidays. Singapore’s cuisine is also a fusion of ethnic flavors—think Hainanese chicken rice (Chinese), satay (Malay), and dosa (Indian)—becoming a global symbol of its cultural diversity.

2. Economic advantage: The ethnic diversity equips Singapore with linguistic and cultural expertise that bridges Asia’s major markets (China, Southeast Asia, India). This has made it a key international business hub, as businesses can leverage cultural understanding to connect with partners across the region.

3. Social and national identity: Singapore has fostered a unique "Singaporean" identity that coexists with ethnic heritage, through policies like multicultural education and racial harmony laws. This social cohesion, built on respecting diversity, has been crucial for the country’s stability and social harmony.

4. Policy and governance: The government has implemented multicultural policies (e.g., ethnic quotas in public housing) to prevent segregation, ensuring that different ethnic groups interact and integrate in daily life, which further reinforces social unity.
