In what ways do Whitman’s O Captain! My Captain! and Dickinson’s Because I could not stop for Death differ in their emotional expression and attitude toward loss?

Whitman’s O Captain! My Captain! is written to mourn Lincoln’s passing and conveys intense and unreserved emotion toward loss. He frames Lincoln as a fallen captain, pouring out raw grief, reluctant longing and public mourning through cries for the departed leader and regret over the unfinished "voyage." His attitude embraces the sharp, fervent agony of loss with tangible, earthbound sorrow. Dickinson’s Because I could not stop for Death, by contrast, expresses emotion toward loss, the end of life, in quiet, understated calm. She casts Death as a gentle companion, weaving acceptance of mortality into the slow, meandering carriage ride and fading twilight imagery. Her attitude frames loss as a natural, inevitable life journey, tinged with quiet transcendence rather than overt anguish.
