How Shakespeare employs the conceit of the 'eternal summer' in Sonnet 18 to transcend the conventional limitations of poetic praise and achieve a form of artistic immortality for the beloved?

In Sonnet 18, Shakespeare employs the "eternal summer" conceit not merely to praise the beloved by comparing them to a beautiful day, but to expose the inadequacy of nature itself. He acknowledges that summer and its beauty are transient, subject to "rough winds" and decline.

The poem then performs a meta-poetic turn: it is the poem itself that creates the "eternal summer." By fixing the beloved's beauty in "eternal lines," Shakespeare transcends the conventional, fleeting praise of nature. The beloved achieves immortality not by being like a summer's day, but by being enshrined in the permanent art of the verse, which will last "so long as men can breathe or eyes can see." Thus, poetic art conquers time.
