    1. The significance of the repeated phrase "Silence and tears" and its emphasis on the theme of separation

The phrase "Silence and tears" is a core emotional symbol that runs through the whole poem, and its repetition has profound significance. Silence represents the unspeakable pain and helpless restraint of the speaker at the time of separation, while tears are the instinctive outpouring of broken heart. The repetition of this phrase forms a structural echo from the beginning to the end of the poem. At the beginning, it describes the sad scene when the two parted; at the end, it imagines the way of greeting after meeting again after years. This not only highlights that the pain of separation has never faded, but also implies that the emotional rift caused by separation can never be repaired. It makes the theme of separation not only stay at the moment of parting, but also extend to the long after years, strengthening the sense of tragedy and permanence of the pain of separation.

    2. The way the poet uses the shift between past and present to deepen emotional tension

The poet weaves the emotional line of the work through the flexible shift of time, which greatly deepens the emotional tension. The poem starts with the past scene of parting—describing the lover's pale cheek and cold kiss when they parted, which is a painful memory of the past. Then it shifts to the present: the speaker hears the lover's name being mentioned, feels like hearing a funeral bell, and bears the shame brought by the lover's broken oath. Later, it flashes back to the past secret trysts of the two, and contrasts with the present silent sorrow. Finally, it looks forward to the possible meeting in the future and falls back on the same emotional state as the past parting. This back-and-forth time conversion makes the past sweetness, the present pain and the future confusion interweave. The strong contrast between different time nodes makes the speaker's inner contradiction and sorrow more intense, and also makes the emotional tension continue to rise, making readers deeply feel the long-term impact of the failed relationship on the speaker.

    3. The symbolic meanings of "the cold dew" and "the dawn" and their roles in shaping the mood

The cold dew: It has a dual symbolic meaning. Physically, it refers to the cold dew in the early morning, which brings a real cold feeling to the speaker's forehead; metaphorically, it is a sign of the subsequent tragic fate of the relationship. It symbolizes the coldness of the lover's feelings, the fragility of the oath and the pain that the speaker will suffer. This image turns the abstract emotional pain into a tangible cold sense, which paves the way for the depressed and sad mood of the whole poem, and makes the premonition of sadness more real and immersive.

The dawn: As the time background of the parting scene, it symbolizes the beginning of the end of the relationship. Dawn is usually a symbol of hope and new life, but in the poem, it is combined with the cold dew, which forms a sharp contrast. It implies that the love between the two people has ushered in a "dark dawn" instead of a bright future. This anti-common symbolic use further strengthens the bleak and desperate mood of the poem, and makes the pain of the speaker at the moment of parting more intense.
