The most prominent type is the Italian or Petrarchan sonnet, named for the poet Petrarch. This form is divided into two main sections: an opening octave (eight lines) with a rhyme scheme of ABBAABBA, which presents a problem, question, or emotional tension, and a resolving sestet (six lines) with a more flexible rhyme scheme like CDECDE or CDCDCD. The volta typically occurs at the transition between these two sections, between lines eight and nine. In contrast, the English or Shakespearean sonnet, perfected by William Shakespeare, is organized into three quatrains and a concluding couplet. Its rhyme scheme is ABAB CDCD EFEF GG, allowing for more rhyming words in English. Each quatrain often explores a different aspect of the theme, with the volta usually appearing in the final couplet, which delivers a pithy, summarizing conclusion or a twist.
