Here are my advice on how to make the most of the lecture you are listening to.

    1. Listen for structure.

In most cases, the structure of the lecture is laid out at the beginning of a lecture, either as a list of headings or a summary of the content. Make notes of this structure right away.

During the lecture, the lecturer may structure their materials by using verbal signposts, or signal words, like:

"I will discuss..."; "My next point is..."; "Turning now to ..."; "An example of this is ..."; "Finally ..."

These signposts will help you structure and highlight your notes.

    2. Taking notes by developing your own style

    3. Overcoming problems of failing concentration and being left-behind

You are much likely to get distracted during the lecture. Putting the points into notes with your own words and using color and images will make notetaking a busy but interesting activity. If you do get strayed, leave some spaces in your notebook and check the missing points with the lecture and another student later. Sometimes you get lost because you couldn't understand the lecture, rather than giving up the whole lecture, write a series of questions or leave space that you can follow up later.
