Phonological and morphological allomorphs are two types of variant forms of a single morpheme that are determined by different linguistic conditions.

By yoke 2023-10-05 174次浏览 课时24

Phonologically conditioned allomorphs are determined by the sound environment in which they appear. For example, the plural suffix -s in English has three different pronunciations depending on the final sound of the noun: /s/ after voiceless consonants (e.g. cats, books), /z/ after voiced sounds (e.g. dogs, rooms), and /ɪz/ after sibilants (e.g. dishes, buses). These three forms are phonologically conditioned allomorphs of the same morpheme.

Morphologically conditioned allomorphs are determined by the grammatical or lexical context in which they appear. For example, the past tense suffix -ed in English has two different forms depending on the verb class: regular verbs add -ed (e.g. walked, played), while irregular verbs change their vowel or consonant (e.g. sang, ran). These two forms are morphologically conditioned allomorphs of the same morpheme.
