phoneme

By yoke 09-23 147次浏览 课时15

phoneme is the smallest segment of sound which can distinguish two words. In other words, a phoneme is a phone of distinctive value. The fact that tip and dip are different words provides evidence that the phones /t/ and /d/ in English are phonemes. By contrast, the aspirated and the unaspirated /p/ are not phonemes in their own right, for they are not of distinctive value. Rather, they are just predictable variations in pronunciation of a same phoneme /p/, i. e. the voiceless bilabial stop. It is observed that the phoneme /p/ is aspirated initially in a syllable and unaspirated elsewhere. In phonology, the variants of a same phoneme are called the allophones of the phoneme. Now, we can say that the two phones, the aspirated and the unaspirated /p/, are the allophones of the phoneme/p/. In other words, we can say that the phoneme /p/ is realized in English by two phones: the aspirated and the unaspirated /p/.
