What is Carl Jung's understanding of the Chinese mind as he sees it in I Ching

  • 01班杨文博 2021-09-30
    1. To him the Chinese mind seems to be exclusively preoccupied with the chance aspects [偶然性] of events at a particular moment.
    2. The Chinese mind seems to stand opposed to the western way of thinking, to wit, the causality procedures, which is to the Chinese unnoticed.
    3. The empirical reality constituted by intertwined natural laws prevails over separated explanations of things.
    4. The moments encompasses everything down to the minutest nonsensical detail, because all of the ingredients make up for the observed moment. [偶然中寻求必然,某时之性质即为恒常] Yet this is also subject to, partially, the reader's competence to identify and verify the pattern. [会释“经”,即从随意扔出的火柴(偶然性)中识别并总结出pattern(规律)之能力,且能以实践证真]

3.The Chinese picture of the moment encompasses everything down to the minutest nonsensical detail, because all of the ingredients make up the observed moment.

4.The hexagram worked out in a certain moment coincided with the latter in quality no less than in time. The Chinese mind deals with the coincidence of events. The synchronistic view on the other hand tries to produce an equally meaningful picture of coincidence.

5.Its meaningful nature can be revealed only if it is possible to read the pattern and to verify its interpretation, partly by the observer 's knowledge of the subjective and objective situation, partly by the character of subsequent events.

Chinese mind seems to be exclusively preoccupied with the chance aspects of events. The jumble of natural laws constituting empirical reality holds more significance for Chinese than a causal explanation of events. In Jung's view Chinese mind disfavor causalistic procedures and Chinese did not purse the ideal world. They are practical. They form their cognitions are fromed by the details and chance events.

Chinese mind pattern is the synchronicity type, which deals with the coincidence of events. From it, an event is sth more than mere chance but a a combination of objective events themselves as well as the subjective states of the oberserver and observerees.

Chinese people have always valued looking at things in a holistic and interconnected way.  For example, we Chinese attach great importance to the right time, the right place and the right people. This is derived from the idea of "unity of heaven and man" in the Book of Changes, and the idea of "tongren", which emphasizes the harmonious relationship between heaven and man, between people, and between man and nature.

    2. The Chinese mind disfavors causalistic procedures. Compared with the Western mind, which carefully assesses the Chinese picture of the moment down to the minutest nonsensical detail, it views the moment as a chance hit.

    3. One typical symptom of the Chinese mind is synchronicity. As causality describes the sequence of events, so synchronicity to the Chinese mind deals with the coincidence of events. The only criterion of the vadility of synchronicity is the observer's opinion that the text of the hexagram amounts to a true rendering of his psychic condition.

Chinese mind view the reality more of a chance hit than the result of causal chain process. And this chance hit includes three elements.

First, the moment of the obervation, since every moment has a lang-lasting impact, and can leave long-lasting trace.

Second, the interdependence of objective events among themselves.

Third, the observer's subjective state, his psychic condition, which would directly influences or partly equals to the psychic conditions in the totality of the momentary situation.

Thus, in Chinese mind, when trying to explain why things come into exsitence, people will first analyze the same psychic qualities of these events, and these lead to the the one and same momentary situation which all exponents belong to.

    2. Synchronicity. Coincident events are not just happening as a result of chance.
    3. How ancient Chinese sages contemplate the cosmos is exhibiting their psychic condition.

The Chinese mind is more focused on the contingent aspect of events. Chinese people care about the occurrence of coincidences. In the ancient Chinese view, the occurrence of events is often a coincidence, rather than the result of a causal chain. A typical symptom of Chinese thinking is synchronicity. Since causality describes the order of events, synchronization with Chinese thinking deals with coincidence of events.

    Jung named this "synteny".

Chinese preoccupied the chance aspect of events, in CarlJung'a mind, and it is unnoticed by people who worship casualty. What people see as reality as their observations is probably not at all the hypothetical reasons of things. For example, students pass the exam not only by themselves but teacher who taught them. Besides, the difficulty of test is an another aspect that influence the grade of students. And  whether students are in their best spirits is an important reason as well. The reason why somebody failed is complex. Even a little thing that you ignored will change everything.
